#BK-TH 901.  THREE DECADES OF FEDERAL LEGISLATION 1855-1885 by S. S. Cox.  Occidental Pub. Co., San Francisco, 1885, presumed first edition.  Brown cloth with very bright gilt title and decoration, approx. 6 1/2" x 9 1/2", a thick 726 pages.  Illustrated with 36 portraits engraved on steel expressly for this work.  "Personal and historical memories of events preceding, during and since the American Civil War, involving Slavery and Secession, Emancipation and Reconstruction, with Sketches of Prominent Actors during these Periods."  Super book on many aspects of causes and after-effects of the war.  The condition of the book is very good.  This thick and heavy book is holding well.  Very light foxing.  Light wear to the edges of the covers, but no fraying or tears.  Price: $115.00.

 

#BK-BI 902.  Large 1873 Hitchcock Bible.  This thick, heavy, old family Bible has many engravings.  Thomas Nast is one of the illustrators.  Besides full page steel engravings, there is a very nicely preserved fold-out hand colored map of Palestine, plus a hand colored map of Paul's Journeys.  There is a Concordance.  The bible condition is tight with a fading cover.  All page edges are gilt.  Over 1000 pages.  The family record pages in the back have not been used.  Price: $150.00.
 

#BK-VA 903.  THE VALIANTS OF VIRGINIA by Hallie Ermine Rives (Mrs. Post Wheeler); illustrated with exquisite color prints; © 1912; pub. by The Bobbs-Merrill Co.; 432 pages.  This lovely book is in very good condition.  The embossing on front depicts a man on a horse and there is gilt lettering on spine and on background on front.  It has a red cloth cover; no outstanding defects.  All-around minor wear/rubbing on spine, edges and corners; binding is still intact, but starting to separate a couple of pages.  There is an inscription in pencil on the first page and the book is presumed to be a first edition.  Pages are fairly clean with only minor spotting.  Price: $25.00. #BK-GM 905.  GREAT MEN AND FAMOUS WOMEN.  Four books, Vol I, Vol II, Vol III and Vol VII.  Published by in New York by Selmar Hess Publisher and edited by Charles F. Horn 1894. These books contain a series of pen and pencil sketches of the lives of the most prominent personages in history. They contain many beautiful photogravures protected by tissue paper, wood cuts and fine illustrations.  Vol. I is entitled "Soldiers and Sailors". Vol. II is entitled "Soldiers and Sailors".  Vol.  III is entitled "Statesmen and Sages".  Vol. VII is entitled "Artists and Authors".  All are very tight to spine and clean.  A previous owner's name is in pencil on second inside blank page on Vol. I.  Beautiful marbled boards, red end papers. Covers are a nice full leather with gold embossed titled on cover and spine.  All volumes show worn areas and chipped spots on spine and covers.  There is a tear in the leather on the front of Vol. III.    Many hours of reading pleasure here.  Price for all four books: $225.00.
